The Illusion of Virtual Space

Clarence Gagnon
Village in the Laurentian Mountains
Oil on Canvas
National Gallery of Canada Cyber Muesum

The painting should be looked at stereoscopically in order for its full effect to be felt. Although the mountain acts as a barrier it deflects the virtual space horizontally.
The psychological illusion of three dimensional Virtual Space exceeds the apparent limitations of the canvas size.
Although there are strong diagonals that lead through the middle-gound to the back-ground, the shapes along the way still retain their separate identity as points of interest - they can be explored like a small model village. For that reason I do not think this compositon makes use of subordination methods in its style and falls more into the mutiplicity catagory.
