People would sometimes pay to have their firewood logs  cut up into smaller 20 inch lengths, which they would then chop into smaller stove sized sections. With no television to distract them many fathers and sons spent fall evenings chopping firewood.  

This is a "typical of the period" gas engine saw mounted on a horse pulled cart.
