According to classical painting tradition objects in the painting must not appear to leave the foreground plane and enter into the viewers space. The integrity of the picure plane must be maintained.
In graphic "A" above the right hand appears very close to the viewer and is also much larger in relation to the size of the face than is normal. It attempts to break through the picture plane.
In graphic "B" above the camera was moved back to obtain a more realistic proportion between hand size and face size as well as attempting to maintain the integrity of the picture plane.

An artist composer may paint / draw an object smaller than it appears in order to maintain integrity of the picture plane and proportional size relationships. It will be noticed that in some paintings in the national gallery the foregrounded hands are much smaller than they would be in real life. In that case the artist was conforming to the picture plane integrity rule.
