This is one of John Flood's favourate portraits. |
"Portrait"
Person Unknown Pastel on paper n.d. 25.5in x 18.5in (ref-012) Unsigned Family Collection This pastel portrait painted in Mr Flood's style, was found amoung his works. This work shows Mr. Flood's ability to be equally at home in the pastel medium and the figurative mode. Note how the form is conceived and built with
planes in all parts of the work - including the light areas. This is the
mark of a well trained artist. There is a tendency on the part of current
art students to flatten the lights, much like burned out areas of a photograph
- and not use planes to build form.

"The
Last Indignity"
Wellington St. Ottawa Charcoal on paper 19in by 24in (ref-137) 1944 from site notes of 1938 Family Collection This Victorian stately home built by the Perley's in the late 19th century was later converted to the "Perley Home for the Incurables". It next became home to the Canadian Department of Agriculture & Livestock Division. It was eventually abandoned only to witness it's stately lawn and garden scarred, by the Ottawa Transport Commission's terminis loop for its new expanding street railway car system. The house finally died in 1938, just after Mr. Flood's site sketch. The site is currently occupied by the Canadian National Archives building. Site Sketch: Pencil on Paper 1938 12in x 17in (ref-226) It is always facinating to find an artists site
sketch and compare it to the worked up drawing. Thanks to Mr. Flood's
son John, we have that rare opportunity.

"House at
Bells Corners"
n.d. Charcoal on paper 18.in x 23.in (ref-136) Family Collection It could well be assumed that Mr Flood, having come through the depression years experienced a lingering need to express his feelings which merged in his sketch of this neglected and abandoned house. The empty chair on the porch hints at emptiness - a loss - better times. The watery effects in the foreground and the shapes on the lawn point towards a warm spring day , a time of birth and life that will bring this house another year closer to it's end - a metaphorical comment on the frailty of life. It would have been fascinating to see this
sketch worked up in colour.

"Mile
20"
Thurso PQ 1941 Charcoal on paper 18.5in x 23.5in (ref-107) Family Collection It is easy for an artist to copy nature's great scenes, but to take a not so great scene of the Thurso National Valley Railway for logs and make it interesting, that is art! In 1942 this drawing, on exhibit in the Art Gallery
of Ontario, was judged by the public as' "best picture in the exhibit."

"Sidney
Clark Ells"
Pencil Portrait 1935 14.25 by 11.5in (ref-211) Nat. Archives Canada An excellent pencil portrait study. Mr. Flood has use pencil strokes to build form. The reproduction is just slightly off - the shadows defining the left side of the face are not as broken up as shown. He is at ease in identifying the planes of
the face and translating them into line. This is a true pencil drawing
as opposed to the current tendency to shade in gradations to imitate a
photographic likeness.
